Now extended to July 2022
Commemorating the centenary of artist Beatrice Offor (1864-1920) who lived in Tottenham, this exhibition explores her beautiful portraits and the imaginings and portrayals of the women she painted. Bringing together her artworks from the collections at Bruce Castle Museum alongside recently discovered paintings, this exhibition draws on new research, the influences in her life and the recent invigorated interest in her art. Beatrice Offor is celebrated as being amongst the first women students who trained at The Slade, going on to become one of the few commercially-successful Edwardian female artists. An unusual forward-thinking artist for her time.

Online talk by Professor Ian Christie
Cinema was only the climax of a long history of Victorian fascination with visual novelties that stretched back to the Georgian era. Film and media historian Ian Christie has been collecting some of these charming and instructive optical objects, and will be demonstrating them 'live' online for his talk for Bruce Castle Museum.
Back in 2019, Bruce Castle had welcomed Ian Christie's exhibition celebrating the 150th anniversary of Robert Paul, Britain's little-known pioneer of 'animated photography', based in Muswell Hill.
Ian Christie is Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck College, and has long been fascinated too by these anticipations of cinematic spectacle.
